Little Pine Mountain was identified by Los Padres National Forest staff as a site in need of reforestation that lies outside of designated wilderness area. The Zaca Fire burned over 240,000 acres in the Los Padres National Forest, including Little Pine Mountain, making it California’s second-largest fire at the time. Little Pine Mountain, which experienced both the Zaca Fire and the 32,000-acre Rey Fire in 2016, has exhibited sporadic recovery across its terrain.
As a collaboration between the Forest Service, Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, and Blue Tomorrow, this project aims to restore recently burned areas on Little Pine Mountain that lost significant forest cover during the Zaca Fire in 2007 and Rey Fire in 2016. This will be done through site preparation and planting of locally adapted oak and conifer saplings. A reforestation plan is currently being developed by Blue Tomorrow designed to mitigate negative impacts to sensitive forest resources while helping restore important conifer forest habitat on Little Pine Mountain.
